About Bregava catchment

The project is supported by The Challenge Fund: Czech Solutions for SDGs which aims to bring innovative solutions for a variety of development challenges to different communities, based on Czech expertise and know-how and solicits the latest technology from different fields: Remote Sensing to acquire Earth Observations (EO) data, Computer Vision to process these data and Machine Learning(ML) to develop models in order to relate meteorological and other EO data with flooding.

A real-world use case of river Bregava, situated in the South-East of Bosna&Herzegovina is presented and supported by Adriatic Sea Watershed Agency which also provides socio-economic context for the application of the project outcomes. It is important to highlight the scalability of the proposed approach and with global coverage of EO data, and effectiveness of computer vision and ML demonstrated it will be reasonably simple to replicate the approach on other catchments in BiH, and wider. Social, environmental and financial potential of the proposed project is enormous - particularly since the approach does not require large capital investments, and could be widely applied within a reasonably short period of time.

The project outcomes result in significant societal impacts, and benefit BiH by providing tools for flood hazard-related events monitoring, modelling and possibility for early warning systems that are essential for reducing damages and avoiding human casualties during the extreme events. Moreover, the proposed project falls neatly within SDG related to urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.
